I don't know if you guys are familiar with Clark Howard or not, hes a consumer advocate based here in Atlanta. Anyway on his radio show today he said that
the polls show that the majority of the American Public would like to see the Postal Dept go to a five day work week but that our Government, the Senate and
Congress is against it. According to what he was saying, they would rather subsidize the postal service and have them deliver six days a week then go to a
five day delivery schedule. This is so typical of politicians. They just want to waste our money. I can wait until Monday to get my utility bill. Other
then bills there is VERY little I get except junk anymore in my mail box.

You meant "Clark", right?
I heard the same thing. I like the Mon-Wed-Fri and Tues-Thurs-Sat delivery idea. You probably could cut the USPS in half. |

Personally I don't care if they would go to a 5 day or 3 day delivery system, however I would want the postoffice itself to stay open at least 5days per
week. We live in a v-e-r-y small town, with an itsy bitsy postoffice that ALWAYS has a huge line...sometimes out the door...(no kidding), reason: since they
handle the passports (incl. pictures, ect.), and with only a one person staff at a time, I can't imagine what it would be like with less days open......we
would need a traffic cop....

Charles, I know, thought it was cute.
GA, I think we all agree about having the USPS office being open Mon-Sat, but to reduce the delivery days down from the current 6 to 5, 4 or even 3. |

Since I started this thread let me say something in defense of the postal workers. I have two friends with postal connections, one who is retired the other is
still working, they say when they have a holiday they have a really large workload when they come back in. One of them told me that its almost not worth
having the day off. I doubt if he really meant that. I think with the volume of mail dropping and the fact that maybe they could spread out the junk mail
they could work out a five day delivery system, maybe Tuesday through Saturday, that way the countries roads would have less on them on a Monday.
Anyway, I am not picking on them; for all the grief they catch I think they do a pretty darn good job. |

I will give you my experience with the postal service. After high school, I worked for the post office here in the summer. One year it was in the office, the
next it was delivering mail, which I really liked once I got used to all the walking and carrying the heavy mail bag. The pay was 3 times the minimum wage, so
it was a great summer job. I filled in for the guys when they took time off, and delivered to all areas in the city. (I was the only female deliverer) I sorted
the mail for the route, then went out and delivered. Every day before the guys went to their routes, they stopped at a local cafe and had coffee and BS'd
for about an hour. After about 2 weeks, the guys told me to slow down. I was getting finished too soon. I needed to stay out the full 8 hours and it was
making them look bad. It was the typical government employee attitude, which is still the same over 40 years later. I also worked at the navy base here once
summer. I would walk through the hangers to get to my office, and the guys would be sitting around playing dominoes or shelling pecans. They didn't have
any planes to work on. But when the planes came in for work, they worked overtime to get the work done. Unbelievable. That is how our tax dollars are spent.

Maybe if the head of the Postal Service took a pay cut they could forego rasing the price of stamps again this year.

My ex-husband is a postal carrier in a small town in Michigan. He works very hard, takes his job seriously, and feels lucky to have it in an area where there
are few jobs to be had. In small towns, apparently the postal service also handles deliverys for UPS and Fedex, because they don't have anyone to deliver
in the rural areas.
Typical government worker? I'm sure they're out there. Can you find those kind of workers in all industries? I think so. |

Georgia Mel:
I am sorry-I realized as soon as I posted that, that I was going to offend and make someone mad. You are right, there are people like that in every business/industry. I really blame the government, not the workers, for allowing that kind of thing to go on. And it does not apply to all governemnt workers. I'm sure when FLMary reads my comment she is going to give me hell, too. I guess I was having a bad day. |

Like anything else, there are people you have a lot of pride in the job they do and people you will find and take advantage of any short cut which is available
to them. The problem is the people who take "short cuts" are noticed more than the majority of hard workers who are thrown into the same
"basket".

Roseaxel,
No problem! My best friend works for our local water authority, and I give her a hard time about our "tax dollars at work". I've called the IRS and the GA Dept of Revenue for tax help, and had some of the nicest, most helpful people, then turned around and found some who clearly didn't care. It is very frustrating. Thanks for speaking up! Mel |

It wouldn't bother me if the post office delivered less days, but I agree with the Post Office being open. I wish they had later hours. One of our local
post offices closes at 4:30!
Rose, I'm not offended by your comment. It's employees like the ones you worked with that make the government look bad. I work 10-12 hours a day with no extra compensation, but I do see some government workers who don't put in their full 40-hour week. Many need to retire, but they continue to come to work and we pay them. Management should be held accountable whether it is government or industry. |

I get all my mail at a P.O. box anyway. I check it on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Other than my 5 regular bills, the main things I anticipate are the
casino mailouts, my Cardplayer magazine and my Playboy.
